Oil Paintings

The Cleaning Process. Oil Paintings usually exposed to sometimes centuries of the accumulation of atmospheric dirt and grime, the build up of soot from open fires, nicotine. The old varnish yellows over time, completely obscuring the original colours, intended by the Artist.

Canvas becomes extremely brittle with age and is very easy to tear. This can be treated with he Lining Process whereby a new quality linen canvas is bonded to the rear of the original canvas with conservation beeswax compound under heat and pressure. This consolidates the vulnerable paint films and gives the painting lasting endurance for the future.

This photograph shows a half cleaned portrait of a young girl. Removal of the yellowed varnish has produced stunning results, revealing the beautiful blue dress and coral necklace which will have been obscured for over a century.
